I am currently doing my masters by research in electrical and information engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand. I am fortunate to be supervised by Professor Ken Nixon and Dr Martin Bekker. My topic is "Measuring quality of life in Gauteng using satellite images and machine learning". This topic is exciting and relevant because it explores the use and combination of different technologies to provide social and economic data about the world we live in. Focusing on South Africa was an obvious choice given not only that I am South African, but also the deep and challenging history which has lead to high inequality. In such a context, how does the application of developing technologies and approaches for measuring "poverty" compare to what I expect to be more uniform environments? How can current research be extended to measure more holistic measures of human well-being beyond economic indicators such as consumption expenditure and asset wealth?
